When it comes to children with disabilities, math may be a struggle for them. There are many reasons why children can’t learn math: visual- spatial difficulties, language processing difficulties, memory problems and cognitive development. These are only some of the many reasons why children have trouble with math but there are many solutions on how math support can help increase a child’s ability to better understand math.
Help Your Child with Math
There are many ways on how a parent can help their child better succeed in math. Here are a few of the many possibilities on how a math problem can be solved:
Use everyday objects such as blocks, cups, balls and pencils to figure out a math problem. -Encourage your child to separate toys or other objects into groups or sizes(such as separating blue toys from red toys or large and small). -Put blocks in two groups and ask which group has more items in it.This will teach the child the concept of large groups and small groups.
Use actual people or your own body parts to solve a math problem, when teaching adding or subtracting. -Have 5 children stand up and ask the question 5-2=? Then take two children away. Visual learning is a great form of allowing a child to understand math problems. - Also using your fingers are another tool of teaching children to add and subtract.
